LGD tests the 8.5th generation OLED evaporation process, is expected to supply MacBook

2022-03-23

Korean media TheElec reported that LG Display has been testing the evaporation process of the 8.5th generation OLED panel since December last year.

The test operation was mainly carried out at its supplier Sunic System's Paju plant, which has Sunic System's 8.5th-generation half-cut and vertical evaporation equipment, as well as other equipment and materials required for LG Display's evaluation, the sources said.

When evaporating red, green and blue organic materials, in addition to etching high-precision metal masks with 6th-generation OLEDs, LG Display is also looking for various evaporation process methods. The entire evaluation process takes approximately one year to complete.

According to reports, LG Display plans to use the 6th generation production line for the 12.9-inch and 11-inch iPads, while the 8.5th generation is provided for the OLED MacBook, which is expected to launch in 2025.

Since the OLED MacBook was launched later than the iPad, LG Display will use larger substrates such as the 8.5th generation, because more panels can be cut out of each substrate, and it will take less time and be more economical.

At the same time, Samsung Display (Samsung Display) has started the 8.5th generation OLED evaporation technology, and cooperated with Japan (Ulvac) to develop vertical evaporation equipment. In addition, Samsung Display also chooses full-cut evaporation technology, which can shorten production time. At present, half-cut evaporation technology is mainly used for 6th generation OLED panels.

TheElec believes that Samsung Display is likely to commercialize the 8.5th generation OLED panel first, because Apple and Samsung may both need this technology.
